Everybody knows you should have five items of fruit or veg a day. But did you know that at least three of those items should be vegetable.

Food can be rated according to a glycaemic index (GI) which refers to how quickly they increase blood sugar. Foods with a high GI will deliver a sugar rush which can make you feel more upbeat but the effect is only short lived. For more sustained energy, eat foods with a low or medium GI.

Don’t try to ease tiredness during the day by eating chocolate or sugary drinks. You will get a quick sugar surge but no sustained benefit.

Ensure that you drink enough water during the day. Failure to keep yourself properly hydrated can lead to tiredness and lack of focus. The amount of water recommended by the NHS in the UK climate is around 1-2 litres per day.
